American Livestock Breeds Conservancy
We are members of the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy, a clearing-house for information on livestock and genetic diversity. These breeds are threatened because agriculture has changed. Modern food production now favors the use of a few highly specialized breeds selected for maximum output in a controlled environment. Many traditional livestock breeds have lost popularity and are threatened with extinction. These traditional breeds are an essential part of the American agricultural inheritance. Not only do they evoke our past, they are also an important resource for our future.

Well-written article on the movement from local farming to commercial production. Explains, factually, how industrial meat animals are bred and raised. No "offensive" pictures.

Food for thought: most other industrialized nations have banned GMOs.
The Campaign is an organization dedicated to creating a national grassroots consumer campaign for the purpose of lobbying Congress and the President to pass legislation that will require the labeling of genetically engineered foods in the United States.
An excellent overview of the key questions raised by consumers as they become aware of GM foods.

Our country has been "cornified." Entertaining and informative documentary about an acre of corn...from preparing the soil, to entering the food chain. Read the labels of the food you eat - how did all that corn get in there? What about the foods that aren't labeled  - beef, fried foods...?
We are a corn fed nation - and corn is one of the top fertilized, "pesticized", "herbicized" GM crops.

We love this mission, this site, and their list of resources. Check it out...you might decide to kiss your grass (and your lawnmower) goodbye!
This is an excellent site, a departure from industrial farming that demonstrates that a better way is possible.
Nationwide, we need to advocate for and support changes that move food production in this direction.
BOOK: Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver
I can't think of a book I have more thoroughly enjoyed. This speaks volumes about my favorite topic - small scale agriculture - and keeping it local. Enjoy Barbara's website related to the book...and recipes. Then go buy the book, don't sell yourself short with the Internet...This is a good read.
BOOK:Harvest for Hope: a Guide to Mindful Eating by Jane Goodall
This is a book to read, not a link. There is no website. It doesn't call you to action, it informs you of truths and choices about the foods you eat - or choose not to eat.  How food is farmed, what GMOs really do...You might lose interest in the first two chapters, hang on until chapter 3!
BOOK:The Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollan
Definately a winter read...if you take this one to the beach, you'll be sunburned. Over 400 pages, and well worth the effort. This one has a website you can get a taste of before you commit to the book...but I'd read it before you eat another meal...
BOOK:The Way We Eat: Why Our Food Choices Matter by Peter Singer and Jim Mason
A must read. "Eating is an ethical act - but to eat ethically requires knowledge of how our food is produced." Well researched, well investigated and well written for an engaging enlightening read.
What is it about? Not a handout, not a political movement, but a way to educate the American public about their food..
This community blog site celebrates all of us who pioneer a HOMEGROWN way to eat, grow, and express ourselves. We connect to the land and to each other. Don't need to farm to fit in!

Seeds of Change
Seeds of Change seeks out traditional varieties from the Americas and treasured heirlooms from abroad, many of which
are in danger of being lost due to the rapid consolidation within the seed industry and the decline of indigenous agriculture and seed-saving knowledge. Google "heritage seeds" and support companies that are saving and selling them - these are the alternatives to GMOs.

Our favorite charity! This organization makes a difference where it matters - on an individual level with a global reach. It addresses world hunger by teaching agricultural and animal husbandry skills to impoverished communities. We can readily identify with the "gifts" being given, bees, llamas, goats, chicks, sheep, pigs...and know how our lives are enriched by our agricultural experience. The crux of the program is "passing on the gift" or mentoring others in what you've been taught...we cannot be two places at once, but if we could, we would share this blessing all over the world. Through Heifer, we do! Our goal is to support the mission of Heifer International by raising donations of each type of livestock kept on our farm by December 31, 2013. If our farm or family have been a blessing in your life, we prayerfully ask that you would consider "passing on the gift" through Heifer International, and extending the blessing to a family we couldn't otherwise reach. This would truly be the greatest gift we could ever receive.

Church of Stop Shopping
Years ago our family gave up the consumerism in Christmas. Long before we discovered Reverend Billy. Having stepped back from buying, we found our truth wrapped in his humor. He urges people to stop shopping (or at least be aware of the impact of their dollars) in his video "What Would Jesus Buy?" Perusing his site will definitely raise ethical questions - some of which you may have never asked yourself. Do we espouse all of his beliefs? No, we do not. But we do agree wholeheartedly with his stop shopping tirade...there is satisfaction in just living.

Little Brown Dress
Another thought (and hopefully change) provoking site. Alex chose to wear the same brown dress for 365 days, saying no to consumerism, fashion, vanity...read her blog to see her thoughts on the subject evolve. Do we embrace all of her ideas? Certainly not, but we embrace her, and the impact of this choice she made!
